This article is a very quick yet detailed history of the tango and its significance to Argentina. While the exact origins of tango are unknown, it is known that tango began during the mid-1800s and created by immigrants. Music and culture was being blended together in the melting pot of many nationalities in Argentina. Tango expressed the sad story of these immigrants in a special way. It was mostly practiced by young men in "low life establishments" of Buenos Aires. Tango did not become widely popular until the early 1900's. By the 1920's it began to spread to London, Paris, New York, and all over the world.
I always had a general idea about tango, but this article really explained a lot. After learning that Tango originated as a way to express the struggle of an immigrant's tough life, I could easily see the connection; it made a lot of sense. I think tango is a very interesting dance, and it always reminds me of hispanic culture, as well as dancing with the stars. This article also made me realize how tango has transitioned from local culture to pop culture.
Tango could easily be the most important cultural trait of Argentina. From the rolling hills of the Patagonia, to the plains of the pampas, everyone in Argentina can closely relate to the dance of Tango. This dance reflects the culture of the Argentine people and represents their lives. For years, it has been a way for people to express themselves and relate to one another. For many Argentines, Tango is not a dance, but a big part of their lifestyle. Not only that, but in the early 20th century it is what helped bring the country into the worldwide spotlight.
