The nesting doll is a very major icon of Russian culture. Because of this, it is pretty hard to believe that it was only invented about one hundred years ago. Artists wanted to reunite the country with its past, so they turned to Russia's peasantry. A hollow wooden doll with a slightly odd shape was the creation.
But this was no ordinary doll. This doll came apart to reveal another doll, which then revealed another doll, and so on. The very first nesting doll was "Rooster Girl.'
They were nicknamed "Matryoshka" or little mother. Nesting dolls soon gained popularity and were displayed in art conventions around the world.

I remember first seeing what I would later find out was called a "Nesting Doll." Despite not knowing what the thing really was, or where it originated from, I could simply tell it was Russian. The goal of the Matryoshka to reunite Russia with a cultural image really was successful. These little things are so neat, and they easily decorate any home. No wonder they are so popular these days. The little peasant girls painted on will instantly make anyone think of Russia.
The Nesting Doll is an extremely significant, vital icon for Russian Culture. It is a very identifiable and special decoration. For Russians, it is a uniting artifact.
